Norwell's "Marching Knights" Selected For "Memorial Weekend" Parade

Norwell’s Marching Knights will be doing something special this Memorial Weekend.

The Knights have been chosen to represent the state’s Class C marching bands in the “500 Festival” in downtown Indianapolis on May 29.

“Two years ago, ISSMA Inc. (Indiana State School Music Association) entered into an agreement with the Indianapolis 500 festival committee to provide four marching bands each year in the 500 festival parade committee,” explained Norwell Band Director Doug Hassell. “Bands that were recognized as either a semi-state or state finalist band were considered eligible to adequately represent their marching band classification in the “500 Festival” parade.

“Typically, the highest placing state finalist bands are contacted first. Last year, Western was the Class C representative. This year, we are the representative.”

The parade begins at noon and will end sometime around 2 p.m. The parade route is 1.9 miles long. The parade will be televised on local CBS for all of those who won’t be able to attend the event.

Further information relating to the parade, the participants, and the route that it will take, can be found at www.500festival.com

"Musical Entourage" Farewells Three Seniors at Spring Spectacular

Bluffton’s show choir “Spring Spectacular” saw three seniors make their final appearances with “Musical Entourage” Wednesday evening at the high school cafetorium.

Pictured above from left to right, Katie Thacker, Daniel Johnson and Emily Harnish have all been involved with show choir throughout the high school career, however only Emily has been with Bluffton throughout. Daniel joined "Musical Entourage" during his junior year, and Katie in her senior year. Emily and Katie both began their involvement with show choir in middle school, and are six year veterans. Emily also served as dance captain for “Musical Entourage” over the past two years.

The contributions of all three were recognized at the conclusion of the “Spring Spectacular”, which featured performances by the seventh and eighth grade choirs as well as “Musical Entourage”. Choreography for the middle school performances was arranged by some of the students themselves, and show choir director Elyse Breeding also recognized their efforts during the final ceremony.

Miss Breeding also thanked senior band members Brandon Anderson and Adam Butler who have been a major part of the show choir program, especially during the competition season, but were unable to attend the show Wednesday, and parents and other adults who have made special contributions towards the program.

Kristan Brinneman thanked Miss Breeding on behalf of the students, presenting her with a bouquet of flowers.

“Musical Entourage” performed five of the routines they have performed over the past year, with solos from Harnish (“Don’t Rain On My Parade”), Mykayla Rodenbeck and Carson Addington (“Song of Purple Summer”), and Rodenbeck again, this time with Aaron Carr (“Disease Medley”).

Also performed were “Virtuoso” and “Johnny One Note”.

The eighth grade choir presented “It’s My Life”, “Don’t Stop Believing” with solos from Drew Gerber, Ciara Lovell, Alex Miller and Breezy Sills, and “Walking On Sunshine”.

The seventh grade choir performed “Mercy” with solos by Haley Hiday, Kaitlyn Schriver and Hannah Worman, “Eye of the Tiger” with a solo effort by Hunter Okey, and “We Go Together”.

Photos and video from the show will be posted here over the next few days.
