It was a slightly more complicated Saturday than usual for Norwell’s show choirs.
The trip to Shelbyville saw them participate in a slightly different competition format, with the Kniught Moves and Knight Stars competing in their regular Small Mixed and Women’s Division competitions during the day, with the top six choirs across all divisions then returning for the evening session, for a special “open” competition.
In the Small Mixed Division, the Knight Moves extended their season record to 24-0, once again taking top honors, and also the Best Vocals caption award. Whiteland paced first runner-up and also took the Best Choreography caption award, with Decatur Central, Frankfort, Lawrence North and Southwestern making up the field.
In the Women’s Division, the Knight Stars suffered their first setback of the season, being pushed back into first runner-up position by Ben Davis High School from Indianapolis. Brittany Blazier won the Best Soloist caption award, but Ben Davis took Best Choreography and Best Vocals. Edgewood, Noblesville, Lawrence North and Princeton made up the field to leave the Knight Stars at 19-1 for the season.
Despite their defeat however, the Knight Stars still scored enough points to qualify for the evening competition, giving Norwell two horses in the race. Ben Davis also qualified both choirs, while Taeys Valley High School and Edgewood made up the six-choir field in the evening.
Fired up by their earlier reversal, the Knight Stars overturned the Ben Davis Women, and also edged the Knight Moves, but just couldn’t get past the Ben Davis Mixed Choir, which took top honors. With the Knight Moves placing second runner-up, it was second and third for Norwell in the evening competition.
In a busy day on stage, Blake Lampton also placed first in the Solo Division, with Laurten Fiechter placing second, to make it a Norwell double.
Hannah Porrata was named Norwell’s Best Performer in the Knight Stars, while Cam Konuch was Best Perfomer for the Knight Moves.
This weekend, Norwell travel to Southwestern High School in southern Indiana for the final competition of the season. The Middle School Choir, the Knight Sounds (2-1 for the season,) will compete on Friday evening with the two high school choirs competing Saturday.
Many thanks once again to Denny and Kathy Meyer for the photo (and results).
