South Dearborn tops 2011 "Raider Classic"

They came, they sang, they conquered!

South Dearborn’s “Opening Knights”, from Aurora, made the longest trek of the nine visiting choirs attending the eight annual “Raider Classic” at Southern Wells on Saturday, but it proved worth the effort.

The “Opening Knights” claimed top honors in the Mixed Choir division, as well as the caption award for “Best Choreography”, and a share (with Crestview) of the “Best Instrumentals” caption award. D.J. Atkins placed third in the Solo Division, and, finally, the big prize – overall “Grand Champion”!

This year’s “Raider Classic” featured competition in Mixed Choir, Ladies Choir, Solo, and – for the first time - Middle School divisions. As host school, Southern Wells was unable to compete, however both “New Horizons” and “Raider Rhythm” provided exhibition performances of the 2011 competition routines.

With the late withdrawal of Bluffton’s “Musical Entourage” no Wells County choirs contested the event. Bellmont’s Conner Hakes however had a great day, winning the Solo Division with his rendition of “To Dream The Impossible Dream”, and he also won the “Best Male Soloist” caption award in the Mixed Choir Division.

In the Solo Division, Olivia Ulch of East Noble placed second behind Hakes.

In the Mixed Choir Division, South Dearborn beat out Crestview, Garrett, Bellmont and East Noble. Garret won the caption award for “Best Tech Crew”, while Crestview’s Caitlyn Hancock was named “Best Female Soloist”. Individual “Best Performer” awards in each group went to Louis Montes (South Dearborn), Sammi Schneider (Crestview), Christian Shaffer (Garrett), Maddie Stoppenhagen (Bellmont) and Cory Spaw (East Noble).

East Noble’s “Premier Edition” topped Bellmont’s “L.E.G.S.” in the Ladies Division, with Alison Thomas (East Noble) and Shelby Wright (Bellmont) chosen as “Best Performer” in each choir.

In the Middle School competition, Southmont’s “Young Originals” edged Bellmont’s “Singing Stars”. Individual “Best Performer” awards for each choir were given to “T-T” Adams (Southmont), Janessa Smedley (Bellmont) and Megan Fiechter (Southern Wells).

Show choir competition will return to Wells County on Feb. 12, when Norwell hosts its annual “Norwell Invitational” at the high school.

More photos, and video, from Saturday, to come.......
