Norwell Winter Drum Line Competition Schedule

Their competition schedule for this season will see them at Decatur Central - IPA Invitational (Feb. 14), Norwell - IPA Invitational (Feb. 28), Indianapolis - WGI Regionals (March 7), Avon - IPA State Prems (March 14), Ben Davis - IPA State Finals (March 21) and Dayton, Ohio - WGI World Finals (April 16-18).

Norwell will be the only Wells County school fielding a drum line this competition season.

.... and a few more pics from Friday night at The Castle

Not all the pictures fitted on just one post, so here are a few more from the Marching Knights' celebration at The Castle.

Several members of the current band will also be involved in Norwell's winter drum line. Their competition schedue will be listed in the next post.

Marching Knights Celebrate 10 Years of Success at The Castle

Norwell's Marching Knights threw a party at The Castle on Friday (Jan. 23), celebrating 10 consecutive years of success at state champs and beyond.

In 1999, the band qualified for the state champs for the first time since 1987, placing sixth. They repeated that success in 2000, and in the eight years since then, have made the top three on seven occassions, with only the fourth placing in 2007 blocking that particular run of success. The band has won the state title on three occassions (2002, 2005 and 2006), and also won national champs twice (2002 and 2003.)

In 2008 the band placed second at the state champs.

The band’s 2005 season was also the first undefeated season in its history.

Members of those past bands joined current band members in performing at the Norwell vs New Haven girls basketball game (won by Norwell of course!) and at half time during the varsity contest, a special ceremony honoring band members was held.

Of the three Wells County High Schools, only Norwell will field a drum line in winter competition this year.

The complete schedule is not yet available, but Norwell will open their season at Decatur Central on Feb. 14, and host a competition on Feb. 28.

The full schedule will be posted when it has been received.

Musical Entourage Performing in Lebanon This Weekend

Bluffton's Musical Entourage will be travelling to Lebanon this weekend for their second competition of the 2009 Show Choir season.

Party with Marching Knights at The Castle on Friday!

The Marching Knights will be having a party at The Castle Friday evening (Jan. 23), and they are hoping that band alumni and supporters will join in the celebration.

The party will be held in conjunction with the girls’ varsity basketball game between Norwell and Bellmont, and will celebrate 10 years of consistent performance in reaching the Class C Marching Band State Finals - and hopefully a basketball victory!

During those 10 years, the Marching Knights have claimed three state championships. In 2008, the Marching Knights placed second with their “Off The Beaten Path” performance.

Band members will be bringing out trophies and awards as part of the celebration, and there will be an opportunity for any Norwell band alumni to come on out and join the pep band during the game. Any alumni interested in joining the pep band on the night is invited to contact band director, Doug Hassell in advance.

The varsity game is expected to start at approximately 7:00 p.m. Admission for the game is $5.00.

Back from California

Robert Wolf and Mallory Elmore, both juniors at Norwell, spent their Christmas break in California, where they performed in the Bands of America 2009 National Honor Band. Together with 313 other students from all over the United States, who were chosen from over 700 applicants, they performed at Disneyland, in the Tournament of Roses BandFest and in the 2009 Rose Parade through and around Pasadena on New Year's Day. The full story is in Wednesday's News-Banner (Jan. 14).

Congratulations!

Congratulations to Bluffton's Musical Entourage for their winning performance at the Raider Classic over the weekend. What a great start to Elyse Breeding's career at the helm - by the way, she also won the Director's Award. Bluffton's Jordan Streveler won the caption award for Outstanding Male Vocals, while Jena Feeback was named as Bluffton's Outstanding Performer.

As host school, Southern Wells couldn't participate in the actual competition, but the Southern Wells Singers and the junior high Raider Rhythm both performed exhibitions of their routines, with Chelsea Smith and Colton Kellam selected as the Outstanding Performers. Full results were in Monday's edition (Jan. 12) of the News-Banner.

Raider Classic Show Choir Invitational

The weather was frightful, but the show was delightful at the 6th Annual Raider Classic Show Choir Invitational last Saturday.
Despite frigid temperatures outside Southern Wells and Bluffton-Harrison students turned in memorable performances inside.
As did all the schools who made it through the storm: Northrop High School Ladies, Bellmont High School Ladies, Crestview High School Mixed and Bellmont High School Mixed. (Photos by Jerry Battiste)
